Perry is the daughter of actor Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. Perry made her debut in the television screen as Jackie Harris, a character played by her mother in her role on the ABC sitcom Roseanne. Perry did not decide to explore acting as a profession until after she had reached adulthood, as her parents were worried about the detrimental impact stress might cause. Perry stated she felt nervous to be an actor in high school but began doing shows in the theater at Northwestern University as a way to make friends after transferring from Boston University. Perry went on to New York, where she was offered small roles in shows such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Homesickness then brought Perry her back home California, where theater jobs were readily available. She performed on Broadway in The Other Place with her mother in 2013. She performed with the father of her character Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in 2015 at the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry played a part in nine episodes of ABC's thriller The Family during 2016. In 2017, Perry starred in a role on ABC's political thriller Scandal along with her father. She played a younger Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off show from CBS's The Big Bang Theory was another portrayal by her younger mother. She was cast in the role in an audition that was open despite being a fan of the persona.
